I think it is safe to say that everyone has seen some pictures of people in the sunflower fields this summer! I dont know if it is just me but the populairty of the Sunflowers of Sanborn has soared this summer. Jo and I decided to venture into the sunflowers one evening for sunset; what we didn’t realize is that the sunflowers face away from the sunset, which led to some backlighting challenges since no one wants to pose with the backside of the flowers.

Grace is a musician in Buffalo, NY and a great friend of mine. This series was shot in her basement studio while she was working on writing her next EP. I was unboxing my lighting gear when Grace and I started talking about her biggest influences while listening to some local artists. When I was set up she started playing guitar along with a few songs in her playlist. Soon it turned in to a jam session which gave us the first 6 pictures.

This shoot left me slightly impressed for different reasons than normal. This was a spur of the moment idea for Meg and I, and all I had to work with was my camera and my Joby Light (a little cube looking thing), none of my studio kit. The christmas lights have now become a part of my gear bag for obvious reasons!

I was peacefully doing homework in my apartment when Jo called, telling me to get to campus as fast as possible and come to a meeting for NAME Magazine, UB’s literary publication. I hurried over to the meeting where I was asked to build a photo gallery of images highlighting the isolation of quarentine and the emotions we are all feeling. Sounded fun! NAME Magazine is normally a spring print publication.

By far this was one of the most fun shoots I have done with friends. Jo and I started at around 6pm, thinking we would shoot for an hour and resume working on homework. We started, the lighting was great, then Maddie (Jo’s roomate) came back to the house and wanted some shots done of her. One of my favorite pictures from the shoot has Jo lying across a mirror. It took around 20 minutes of playing with angles and lighting to get the shot we have now.

It feels strange to sit down to do a write up of a photo shoot with a close friend and be at a loss for where to start. Jo has become one of my closest friends since we met Sophomore year at UB, and I could not imagine my life without her. She helped me through some harder times in my life and I am forever grateful for it. Jo and I planned to do a session together, and finally decided to meet on the frozen lake at UB.

I was leaving Ellicotville where I was staying with Sydney and Meg and decided to take a little detour to the top of a hill off Route 240 which is where I captured the wide shots of the road. I was in no rush to get home so I drove for an hour through Otto and East Otto, capturing pictures of the abandoned barn and house. As I was driving through Springville about to hop on the 219 home, I looked down while going across the bridge and saw Cattaragus Creek.

What was a cold hour where my hands froze and we were scolded by a Cop for being on train tracks turned into one of my favorite photo shoots to date. My friend @michaelleejackson lent me his 85mm 1.4 GM lens, which delivered the stunning bokeh. Thank you again Mackenna for working with me and being a great model in the cold!

I started off the day driving around Ellicotville, looking for a place to take pictures. I drove up the access road to Holdiay Valley, hoping to get to the top, but sadly found all of the gates locked. On my way back down I saw the abandoned barn and couldn’t help but stop to take pictures. Lexi and I got some fun shots until I nearly dislocated my shoulder jumping off of a guard rail.

My dad called me one afternoon when I had Lexi in the car and invited us to come to Newport, RI with them for a weekend in the fall to meet up with some family friends. We of course said yes. While it rained most of the time we were there, we were able to go sailing and the rain created a beautiful saturated look across the island.
